Power: Nov 1-5: Prices extend rally amid shrinking offers

In the day-ahead market on JEPX (Japan Electric Power Exchange), the 24-hour spot power prices for Nov 1-5 delivery gained further ground from the previous week in both East Japan and West Japan. The prices outperformed the previous week, though Nov 3 was a holiday in Japan. Spot prices were apparently bolstered by shrinking offers since the beginning of November. Weather conditions and the status of thermal unit operations on a public basis did not show any visible changes from the previous week. But power producers could have curbed thermal unit runs behind the scenes, trimming a surplus in power supply.

The actual highest price during the week was at Yen 55.00 in the system price for Nov 2 delivery. The actual lowest price during the week was at Yen 0.01 in Kyushu for Nov 2-4 delivery.

By area, the weekly average of the 24-hour spot prices was at Yen 15.12 in Hokkaido, up Yen 1.48 from the previous week, Yen 15.43 in Tohoku, up Yen 1.57, Yen 15.43 in Tokyo, up Yen 0.85, Yen 18.99 in Chubu and Hokuriku, up Yen 2.88, Yen 18.81 in Kansai, up Yen 2.75, Yen 18.81 in Chugoku and Shikoku, up Yen 2.92, and Yen 12.38 in Kyushu, up Yen 3.19.

Power demand in nine areas of Japan during Nov 1-5 was a combined 10,950.33 mil kWh, down 1.7% from 11,143.02 mil kWh during Oct 25-29. The figure was down 2.2% from the corresponding period a year earlier. Demand during Nov 2-6, 2020 after day of week adjustment was 11,200.63 mil kWh.

In the JEPX forward market, no transactions were reported during Nov 1-5.

Deals reported on TOCOM (Tokyo Commodity Exchange) during Nov 1-5 were as below.

Deals reported on EEX (European Energy Exchange) during Nov 1-5 were as below.

In the second week of November, the temperatures during day time are expected to remain relatively mild across Japan. The highest temperature is forecast to be around 20 degrees for most of the week from Kyushu to southern Tohoku, leaving little room to use either air-conditioners or heaters. But the lowest temperature is forecast to be around 10 degrees in Tokyo and Osaka while Hokkaido will sometimes have the day's low below 5 degrees. A possible pickup in power demand could trigger a further rally in night time prices. Meanwhile, the weather is forecast to be rainy in the first half of the week from Kyushu to Kanto. In the latter half of the week, rain clouds are expected to grip Tohoku and Hokkaido as well. Solar power supply is likely to decrease from the first week of November, a factor that will lift day time prices.
