Weekly Summary

Power: Sep 20-24: Prices remain almost stable, West hits Yen 25 level

In the day-ahead market on JEPX (Japan Electric Power Exchange), the 24-hour spot power prices for Sep 20-24 delivery remained almost stable from the previous week in both East Japan and West Japan. Demand slowed down for the Silver Week holiday week. But the highest temperature widely exceeded 30 degrees on weekdays in between holidays, a factor that gave a boost to demand. Under the circumstances, spot prices were mixed from area to area. In West Japan, spot prices temporarily rallied to hit the Yen 25 level in evening.

The actual highest price during the week was at Yen 25.94 in five areas in West Japan from Chubu to Shikoku for Sep 22 delivery. The actual lowest price during the week was at Yen 0.01 in Kyushu for Sep 20-24 delivery.

By area, the weekly average of the 24-hour spot prices was at Yen 8.73 in Hokkaido, up Yen 0.30 from the previous week, Yen 7.99 in Tohoku, up Yen 0.16, Yen 7.99 in Tokyo, down Yen 0.09, Yen 8.93 in Chubu, Hokuriku and Kansai, up Yen 0.28, Yen 8.93 in Chugoku and Shikoku, up Yen 0.27, and Yen 6.21 in Kyushu, down Yen 2.11.

Power demand in nine areas of Japan during Sep 20-24 was a combined 11,705.48 mil kWh, up 0.1% from 11,692.08 mil kWh during Sep 13-17. The figure was up 8.3% from the corresponding period a year earlier. Demand during Sep 21-25, 2020 after day of week adjustment was 10,807.70 mil kWh.

In the JEPX forward market, no fresh transactions were reported.

On TOCOM (Tokyo Commodity Exchange), no deals were reported during Sep 20-24.

Deals reported on EEX (European Energy Exchange) during Sep 20-24 were as below.

In the week starting Sep 27, day time prices will be capped by ample solar power supply in the first half of the week amid sunny weather across Japan. Meanwhile, the weather is forecast to go downhill in a wide range of areas in the latter half of the week. A tightness in solar power supply is believed to push up day time prices, but relatively slow demand is likely to limit any price gain. But a recent rise in fuel prices increased power generation costs, and power prices will have limited downside potential. Spot prices are expected to remain buoyed above the Yen 10 mark in evening across Japan, with little chance to slip off Yen 6 even during night time.
