Weekly Summary

Power: Sep 13-17: Prices strengthen on tighter solar supply

In the day-ahead market on JEPX (Japan Electric Power Exchange), the 24-hour spot power prices for Sep 13-17 delivery gained ground from the previous week in both East Japan and West Japan. The weather was rather cloudy in both East Japan and West Japan. Solar power supply was tighter than the previous week, lifting spot prices led by day time. In the latter half of the week, some areas in West Japan had stormy weather as the typhoon No14 approached Kyushu. Besides that, lower power reserve rates also served as a bullish factor with several thermal unit off line for regular maintenance.

The actual highest price during the week was at Yen 13.91 in West Japan for Sep 14 delivery. The actual lowest price during the week was at Yen 0.01 in Hokkaido and Tohoku for Sep 13 delivery.

By area, the weekly average of the 24-hour spot prices was at Yen 8.43 in Hokkaido, up Yen 0.61 from the previous week, Yen 7.83 in Tohoku, up Yen 0.28, Yen 8.08 in Tokyo, up Yen 0.49, Yen 8.65 in Chubu, Hokuriku and Kansai, up Yen 0.60, Yen 8.66 in Chugoku and Shikoku, up Yen 0.62, and Yen 8.32 in Kyushu, up Yen 0.81.

Power demand in nine areas of Japan during Sep 13-17 was a combined 11,698.08 mil kWh, down 0.9% from 11,795.27 mil kWh during Sep 6-10. The figure was down 4.4% from the corresponding period a year earlier. Demand during Sep 14-18, 2020 after day of week adjustment was 12,224.41 mil kWh.

In the JEPX forward market, no fresh transactions were reported.

Deals reported on TOCOM (Tokyo Commodity Exchange) during Sep 13-17 were as below.

Deals reported on EEX (European Energy Exchange) during Sep 13-17 were as below.

In the week starting Sep 20, there will be two national holidays for the Silver Week, and spot prices are expected to have limited upside potential. The weather is forecast to be rather sunny than this week. A possible growth in solar power supply will likely generate downside pressure on spot prices. The temperatures are forecast to rise near 30 degrees from Kyushu to southern Tohoku. But such a rise in temperatures will be offset by a holiday demand lull and ample solar power supply, leaving little impact on spot prices.
