Weekly Summary

Power: Jun 21-25: Solar power sends East higher, but West down

In the day-ahead market on JEPX (Japan Electric Power Exchange), the 24-hour spot power prices for Jun 21-25 delivery rose in East Japan, but turned lower in West Japan from the previous week. East Japan had less sunshine than the previous week, but West Japan turned rather sunny. Spot prices mirrored the status of solar power generation. But Kyushu sank to Yen 0.01 even on some weekdays, pressuring spot prices in West Japan.

The actual highest price during the week was at Yen 10.06 in West Japan for Jun 21 and 22 delivery. The actual lowest price during the week was at Yen 0.01 in Kyushu for Jun 21 and 23 delivery.

By area, the weekly average of the 24-hour spot prices was at Yen 7.55 in Hokkaido, up Yen 0.85 from the previous week, Yen 7.22 in Tohoku, up Yen 0.53, Yen 7.22 in Tokyo, up Yen 0.14, Yen 7.52 in Chubu, down Yen 0.74, Yen 7.52 in Hokuriku and Kansai, down Yen 0.99, Yen 7.50 in Chugoku and Shikoku, down Yen 1.01, and Yen 7.20 in Kyushu, down Yen 1.30.

Power demand in nine areas of Japan during Jun 21-25 was a combined 11,698.11 mil kWh, up 0.6% from 11,623.96 mil kWh during Jun 14-18. The figure was up 2.4% from the corresponding period a year earlier. Demand during Jun 22-26, 2020 after day of week adjustment was 11,420.53 mil kWh.

In the JEPX forward market, no deals were reported after Jun 11.

Deals reported on TOCOM (Tokyo Commodity Exchange) during Jun 21-25 were as below.

Deals reported on EEX (European Energy Exchange) during Jun 21-25 were as below.

During the week starting Jun 28, more days are expected to have cloudy weather than the previous week. A possible decrease in solar power supply is likely to push up day time prices. The peak-demand summer season will finally kick off in July, but the temperatures are currently forecast to be below 30 degrees in many areas during the week starting Jun 28. Relatively cool temperatures will put a lid on buying interest to meet power demand. Tighter solar power supply may still serve as a bullish factor, but any pickup in buying interest will have a limited upside effect for spot prices.
