Weekly Summary

Power: Jun 14-18: East stable, West rises on tighter solar power

In the day-ahead market on JEPX (Japan Electric Power Exchange), the 24-hour spot power prices for Jun 14-18 delivery stayed in a tight range in East Japan, but gained ground in West Japan. In West Japan, spot prices chased the upside led by day time as solar power supply dwindled from the previous week. The market continued to mirror the status of solar power generation. Meanwhile, Kanto Koshin also entered the rainy season on Jun 14, curbing solar power supply. But Hokkaido and Tohoku had sunshine to some extent, leaving the overall East Japan in a narrow range.

The actual highest price during the week was at Yen 20.30 in five areas from Hokuriku to Kyushu for Jun 18 delivery. The actual lowest price during the week was at Yen 4.65 in Hokkaido and Tohoku for Jun 14 and 17 delivery.

By area, the weekly average of the 24-hour spot prices was at Yen 6.70 in Hokkaido, down Yen 0.02 from the previous week, Yen 6.69 in Tohoku, down Yen 0.23, Yen 7.08 in Tokyo, up Yen 0.02, Yen 8.26 in Chubu, up Yen 0.32, Yen 8.51 in Hokuriku and Kansai, up Yen 0.50, Yen 8.51 in Chugoku and Shikoku, up Yen 1.09, and Yen 8.50 in Kyushu, up Yen 1.26.

Power demand in nine areas of Japan during Jun 14-18 was a combined 11,623.96 mil kWh, down 1.1% from 11,747.97 mil kWh during Jun 7-11. The figure was up 3.3% from the corresponding period a year earlier. Demand during Jun 15-19, 2020 after day of week adjustment was 11,247.44 mil kWh.

In the JEPX forward market, no deals were reported during Jun 14-18.

Deals reported on TOCOM (Tokyo Commodity Exchange) during Jun 14-18 were as below.

Deals reported on EEX (European Energy Exchange) during Jun 14-18 were as below.

During the week starting Jun 21, sunshine will be witnessed in more days than the previous week. A possible pickup in solar power supply will put a lid on day time prices. The temperatures are forecast to be almost flat from the average year across Japan. But increasing sunlight will boost heat wave, and steady air-conditioning demand is likely to help spot prices resist downside pressure. Meanwhile, the interconnection line between Hokkaido and Tohoku is scheduled to enter maintenance works during Jun 18-30, a factor that will likely cause price divergence more frequently. The Kansai-Chugoku interconnection line will be also under ongoing maintenance, and price divergence will be witnessed mainly in day time.
