LNG: May 10-14: DES Northeast Asia exceeds $10 with supply concerns heightening

--DES Northeast Asia

DES Northeast Asia prices rose at 65cst from end last week to $10.20-10.50 for second-half June delivery. In addition to the 16.30 mil mt/year North West Shelf (NWS) project in Australia, problems occurred at the 7.60 mil mt/year Tangguh project in Indonesia and the 3.60 mil mt/year Prelude project in Australia. As demand for stock building toward summer was robust, buyers had no choice but to raise their bids. Malaysian state-owned Petronas awarded its sell tender closed on Wednesday for a cargo from the 28.00 mil mt/year Bintulu project for Jul 1-7 delivery in the mid $10's. And Korean steel manufacturer POSCO purchased a cargo for Jun 20-25 delivery in the low $10's via private negotiations.

Arcelormittal Nippon Steel (formerly Essar Steel) issued a long-term buy tender on a DES India basis closing Friday. It was looking for a total of eight cargoes for delivery in March, June, July and September 2022 and in March, May, August and October 2023. Arcelomittal had conducted a buy tender in November last year for 27-30 cargoes for delivery during 2024-2026 but did not award the tender.

The 8.80 mil mt/year Montoir terminal stopped receiving LNG after having taken in a cargo from the 22.20 mil mt/year Bonny Island project in Nigeria on Apr 22 due to a pipeline problem. The 148,300cbm conventional tanker "LNG Ondo", also carrying a cargo from the Bonny Island project had arrived at the terminal at present but was made to wait before it could discharge the cargo. A portfolio player sold a cargo for second-half May delivery on Tuesday to Wednesday at a discount of 20cts to TTF. The portfolio player had sold the cargo for delivery to the Montoir terminal but changed the destination to another area in Northwest Europe since it could not supply it to the Montoir terminal. Cargoes with their destinations changed from the Montoir terminal were seen to be resold mainly to the 8.90 mil mt/year Gate terminal in the Netherlands and to Spain.
