Indonesia to retire coal-fired power plants by 2040

Indonesian President Prabowo announced at the G20 summit in Brazil in November 2024 that the country will phase out coal-fired power generation by 2040. The president said that this will be achieved by switching to renewable energy generation. Indonesia is the largest coal consumer in Asia and has set a goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

However, there are many skeptical views among those in the country about the plan to phase out coal power generation. Even after the president's announcement, government sources have not mentioned about abolishing coal power generation. Indonesia's electricity demand is expected to increase by around 5% annually going forward. It is reported that Indonesia's energy mix from January to June 2024 is 39.5% coal, 30% oil, 16.5% natural gas, and 14% new energy or renewable energy (NRE).

It was believed that the government will have to close several coal-fired power plants each year in order to achieve the target. Besides, the cost of building NRE-based power plants to replace coal is too high to be financed with domestic funds alone. It is said that there are currently no plans to raise funds from abroad.
