Indonesia starts bunkering services in Sunda Strait

Indonesia is focusing on expansion of bunkering services to vessels including those operating overseas since the International Maritime Organization (IMO) tightened regulations of sulfur content in bunker fuels to 0.5% from 2020. Pertamina, Indonesia's state-owned oil and gas company, started supplying low sulfur fuel oil (LSFO) to vessels at the Cigading Port in Banten Province in the western part of Java from August. The port will become a base for supplying bunker fuels to vessels sailing through the Sunda Strait between the Java Sea and the Indian Ocean. Bunker fuels are expected to be supplied mainly to Australian vessels. Pertamina is a major producer of LSFO in Indonesia. At the Cigading Port, bunkering services are provided by Pertamina Putra Niaga, a subsidiary of Pertamina. The company supplied 175,000 liters to a bulk carrier registered in Cyprus in late August. In Indonesia, bunker fuels can be also supplied at major ports including Tanjung Priok, Balikpapan, Surabaya, Makassar and Panjang.
