60 MW floating solar farm begins operations in Singapore

The largest floating solar farm began operations in July in Singapore. The news was announced by the operators, National Water Agency (PUB) and Sembcorp Industries, a major local company. This is the third floating solar farm in the country. The new floating solar farm is on the Tengeh Reservoir in western Singapore and construction began in August last year. 122,000 solar panels are used and the size is equivalent to 45 soccer fields. These panels are designed to be used for 25 years. The power capacity is 60MW on a peak basis. It is estimated to be able meet the electricity demand equivalent to about 16,000 households for one year. 32 kilotons of carbon emissions can be reduced a year, which is the same scale as scrapping 7,000 cars. Further, floating solar panels can perform between 5% to 15% better than rooftop solar panels because of the cooling effect of the water.
