Weekly Summary

Power: Jun 22- 26: Prices down both in cool east, sunny west

Japan's wholesale electricity prices extends losses in the week to June 26, due to the disordered rainy season in which east areas' temperatures were cool, west's skies clear. Based on the Rim Power Index (Day ahead 24 hours), the weekday power prices in the eastern market, including Hokkaido, Tohoku and Tokyo area, averaged out at 5.64 yen per kilowatt hour (kWh), down 0.23 yen/kWh or 3.9 % from the prior week, meanwhile prices in the western, made up of the Chubu, Hokuriku, Kansai, Chugoku, Shikoku and Kyushu area, at 4.78 yen/kWh, down 0.56 yen/kWh or 10.5%.

Lower-than-average temperatures seemed to lopped off demand for air-conditioning in eastern Japan. Daily maximum temperatures for Tokyo were estimated on a day ahead basis at the range of 23 to 26 degrees Celsius for Jun 22 through 25, and 30 deg C only on Jun 26. Although the rainy season was not over yet, solar photovoltaic stations generated sufficient electricity in west Japan under relatively-sunny weathers, especially for Jun 22 through 24.

The premium of Hokkaido to Tokyo stood minus 0.12 yen/kWh compared to plus 0.63 yen/kWh seen in the previous week, with Hokkaido's 24 hours average 5.54 yen/kWh (previous week's ave:6.51 yen) and Tokyo's 5.66 yen/kWh (5.88 yen), which are reckoned in conformity to data compiled by the Japan Electric Power Exchange (JEPX). Hokkaido prices often move at higher levels than other areas especially in the winter season. Tohoku's average climbed by 0.09 yen/kWh to 5.64 yen/kWh.

Kansai's weekly average declined by 0.52 yen/kWh to 4.82 yen/kWh, and Kyushu's dropped by 0.52 yen/kWh to 4.82 yen/kWh. The differential of the two areas grew to 0.12 yen/kWh from zero observed in the prior week. Kansai area is the biggest market in the western Japan, and Kyushu's prices are apt to hover at less expensive levels alongside of other areas. Night time averages in Kansai and Kyushu were also nudged down provably by undue supply, while eastern night time averages strengthened unlike softened daytime averages. Western electricity producers were apparently forced to reduce fuel stockpiles of thermal power due to slow demand that was created by a break in the rainy season and stagnated economic activities in the wake of the new corona virus disease.

On JEPX, the weekday average of System Price (Day ahead 24 hours), which were figured based on the data of 9 areas, dropped by 0.40 yen/kWh or 7.2% to 5.19 from the previous week's 5.59 yen/kWh, with the average volume recording 875,503 MWh compared to 878,472 MWh observed in the previous week.
