Polyolefin exports decline in China

There is a growing sense of surplus in the supply of polyolefins as several new polyolefin facilities were launched in 2021 in China. In addition, countries that have been buying polyolefins from the US are also actively buying polyolefins from China. Due to the effects of COVID-19 and the cold wave in February, multiple polyolefin facilities have been shut down and supply is decreasing in the US. China's exports of polyolefins from January to March in 2021 were approximately 82,800 tons of polyethylene (PE) and approximately 343,000 tons of polypropylene (PP), and the total export volume increased by 158.01% from the same period of the previous year. In particular PP exports are conspicuous and the main destinations are India, Turkey, Vietnam, Pakistan, and Brazil. The sense of tight supply is likely to ease in the future. The facilities that had been shut down have resumed operation and supply is recovering in the US. In addition, regular maintenance of polyolefin facilities in the Middle East is almost completed. On the other hand, purchases of Chinese polyolefins are on the decline. Although COVID-19 vaccinations are progressing in many countries, the demand for polyolefins is declining.
